The mysterious story behind Neem Karoli Baba’s blanket
There is a very popular story related to Baba Neem Karoli’s blanket. It is said that an elderly couple were great devotees of Baba who used to live in Fatehgarh. This incident is said to have happened in 1943 when one day Baba suddenly arrived at their house and said that he would stay there for the night. Hearing this, both of them were very happy and served Baba very well. After having food, Baba covered himself with a blanket and lay down on the cot. After this, both the elderly couple also went to sleep. But they could not sleep because in the other room, Baba ji kept groaning all night while covered with the blanket. Both the husband and wife sat near Baba’s cot and started wondering what was happening to Baba.
It seemed as if someone was beating Baba. When morning came, the Maharaja got up, wrapped the blanket, and gave it to the elderly couple, telling them to throw it into the water. As he left, Baba said, “Don’t worry, your son will return within a month.” The couple obeyed Baba’s command and threw the blanket into the water. After about a month, the elderly couple’s son returned. He was a soldier who had served in the war. The elderly couple was delighted to see their son return safely from the war. But when their son returned home, he told them a story that shocked them. He told them that about a month earlier, he had been surrounded by enemies. There was firing all night, killing all his companions, but he alone survived. The boy was astonished to find that he hadn’t been hit by a single bullet.
It is said that this incident happened to the boy on the same night Neem Karoli Baba stayed at the elderly couple’s house. It is believed that Neem Karoli Baba took upon himself the danger that was coming to the boy, preventing the bullets from harming him. It is said that after this incident, Baba’s blanket became even more famous. Although there is no concrete evidence to support this story, it is quite popular among devotees. It is said that after this story became popular, devotees began offering blankets at Kainchi Dham.
