In a complex 12-hour surgery, doctors at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi successfully performed a second bilateral hand transplant, offering a new beginning to a young mother who lost both her hands in an accident.
The surgery, carried out on April 21 by the hospital’s department of plastic surgery and microsurgery, marks a significant step in advanced reconstructive care.
The patient had lost both her hands in a chaff-cutting machine accident while working, leaving her fully dependent on others for daily activities. She had been on the hospital’s transplant waiting list. The procedure became possible after an in-house brain-dead donor was identified and the family consented to donate the limbs.
Doctors said the patient is recovering well.
Dr Anubhav Gupta said, “Bilateral hand transplantation is not just a surgery, it is a carefully orchestrated sequence where even a few minutes can determine graft survival. Our goal was not only to restore form, but to give her the ability to return to her children with dignity and function.”Doctors also stressed the importance of limb donation, noting that, like eye or organ donation, it can give a second chance at life to people who have lost their hands and depend on others for everyday tasks
