Vrindavan boat tragedy: Moga’s Sapna Hans was on anniversary pilgrimage with family

Grief gripped the Guru Ramdas Nagar locality in Moga on Saturday as the body of 55-year-old Sapna Hans was brought home. She was among the victims of the tragic boat accident in the Yamuna River at Vrindavan on Friday.

The incident has left the family shattered, as they had travelled to the holy city to celebrate the wedding anniversary of Sapna and her husband, Anil Hans, on April 8.

The Hans family had reached Vrindavan on Friday afternoon for darshan. According to reports, the family was split between two boats. The boat carrying Sapna Hans, along with Reema Hans and Saroj Rani, collided with a pontoon bridge near Kesi Ghat and capsized.

While family members in the other boat, including Anil Hans and their niece Neha, remained safe, Sapna drowned in the mishap. Reema and Saroj were rescued and are stated to be in critical condition at a local hospital.

A pall of gloom descended on the locality as hundreds of residents, relatives and local leaders gathered to pay their last respects.

Tehsildar Lakhwinder Singh Gill visited the bereaved family and offered condolences on behalf of the administration.

Sapna is survived by her husband and two sons, one based in Delhi and the other, settled abroad. Her son from Delhi rushed to Vrindavan upon receiving the news.

“The family had gone with joy to celebrate a special occasion, but returned in grief,” said a neighbour.

The boat accident reportedly claimed several lives and left many injured.
