New Delhi
Taking a step towards strengthening transparency, accountability, and public participation, the Public Works Department (PWD) is set to begin installing display boards equipped with QR/bar codes on all roads across Delhi where reconstruction—specifically road strengthening and re-carpeting—work is currently underway. Through this initiative, citizens will not only receive information but will also be provided with the opportunity to offer their feedback directly.
What Information Will the QR Codes Provide?
According to the new directives, these display boards will be installed at bus shelters, major intersections, and high-traffic areas within seven days of the completion of any road-related work, thereby ensuring maximum public reach. Upon scanning these QR/bar codes, citizens will gain access to comprehensive details regarding the respective project; this includes vital information such as the name and length of the road, the date of the last strengthening work, details of the contractor/agency involved, and the approved project cost.
600 Kilometers of Roads to be Revamped Under the New Scheme
Additionally, an integrated feedback mechanism has been incorporated into the QR system, enabling citizens to directly convey their complaints, suggestions, or experiences regarding the quality of the road work to the department. It is worth noting that the Delhi Government had announced this scheme a few months ago, and work on its implementation is now set to commence. The PWD currently manages a road network spanning 1,440 kilometers, 600 kilometers of which are slated for reconstruction under this new scheme.
An Important Step Towards Public Participation: Parvesh Verma
“Transparency implies not merely providing information, but also actively listening to the people. Through this initiative, citizens will not only be able to access details regarding road works but will also have the opportunity to provide their feedback directly. This will render the system more accountable and responsive. A uniform design and strict maintenance protocols have been established for all display boards. Directives have been issued to all divisions to ensure that the boards remain clearly visible, the QR codes remain functional at all times, and the information is updated immediately following the completion of any new work.”
