The Congress had fielded 31 and Shiromani Akali Dal 30 candidates in the election which the former state BJP chief had described as a “BJP versus All” fight. About 50 old-timers in the BJP had quit the party due to differences over the allocation of tickets. Former Municipal Council president Shivraj Goyal, secretary of the state working committee and son of former MLA Dr Ram Kumar Goyal had also expressed resentment over the same issue but he did not quit the party. In most of the wards, results of which have so far been announced, INC and SAD fared poorly and their candidates were all set to lose their security deposits, analysts said.
