Kokila Vrat Ki Katha: Kokila Vrat is considered to be of special importance in Sanatan Dharma. This fast has been dedicated to the nightingale form of Mata Parvati. There is a religious belief that by observing this fast, married women get unbroken good fortune. Not only this, this fast is also a boon for virgin girls. It is believed that due to the effect of this fast, virgin girls get the desired groom. According to the Drik Panchang, this year’s Kokila fast will be observed on August 28. On the same day, the full moon of the month of Sawan will also be celebrated.

Once Goddess Sati took the form of a cuckoo and did penance for thousands of years. This nightingale fast reminds us of that difficult penance of Mata Sati. For this reason, a cuckoo idol made of clay is worshiped in this fast. It is said that the reason behind Mata Sati getting the form of Kokila i.e. Koyal was a curse given by Lord Shiva. In such a situation, let’s know the story of Kokila fast.

According to legend…
According to the legend, Mata Sati’s father King Daksha had organized a yagna, in which he invited all the gods and goddesses, but did not call Mata Sati and Mahadev. When Goddess Sati came to know about this, she started insisting on going to the yagna from Mahadev. Lord Shiva explained a lot to Sati that it is not right to go to this yagna without being invited, but mother Sati did not agree to Mahadev and went to the yagna.

Cursed to live as a cuckoo
As soon as Mata Sati reached her father Daksha’s yagna, her father insulted her and her husband i.e. Lord Shiva a lot. Mother could not bear the insult of Mahadev and jumped into the fire of Yajna Kund. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, he sentenced Daksha to death. At the same time, he cursed Mata Sati to live as a cuckoo for thousands of years for disobeying her.

It is said that due to this curse of Lord Shiva, Goddess Sati lived as a cuckoo in Nandan Van for many thousands of years. Then he was born as Mata Parvati and he received Lord Shiva.
