How dangerous are snakes?

The surprising thing about snakes is that most snakes are not dangerous to humans because they are not venomous. It is believed that only about 600 out of 4,000 snake species are venomous. However, about 200 species pose the greatest threat to humans.

Even if non-venomous snakes bite a human, they are not significantly affected. The risk of death is negligible. In India, most snakebite deaths occur annually in rural areas, where timely access to hospitals and antivenom is difficult.
