Chaos and controversy surrounding the students’ council elections at Gargi College have intensified, with rival groups trading allegations of misconduct, intimidation and interference, turning the incident into a political flashpoint.
The unrest began on Friday during the election process at the Delhi University college, where tensions escalated between student groups amid claims of attempts to influence the polls. A student at the centre of the row alleged that she was verbally abused and threatened by a male professor. She further claimed that she was made to wait for hours and pressured into signing documents certifying that the elections were being conducted fairly.
Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Aryan Mann said he had received repeated calls from the student seeking help. He alleged that she was also removed from the counting room on the day of the elections, raising serious concerns about transparency.
Mann said he, along with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), went to the campus to “ensure fairness and safety”, accusing the college administration of failing to act.
However, the incident has drawn sharp political reactions. Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj has written to Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, alleging that a group of ABVP-linked individuals, led by Mann, forcibly entered the all-women’s college without permission and created chaos, causing distress among students. In his letter, Bharadwaj also questioned the role of Delhi Police, stating that despite being present, officers failed to take immediate action and no FIR has been registered so far. He has sought directions for legal action against those involved and called for a fair and prompt investigation.
