A massive fire broke out late on Saturday night in a jhuggi cluster near Sikanderpur Metro Station, rapidly engulfing hundreds of shanties and triggering panic in the densely populated area. Thick black smoke billowing from the site was visible from several kilometres away, highlighting the intensity of the blaze.
According to initial information, the fire is suspected to have originated from a single hut and spread within minutes due to strong winds. The situation worsened after multiple small gas cylinders inside the huts exploded, further fuelling the flames and causing chaos among residents.
While fears were raised about people being trapped, officials from the Fire Department and civil defence said no casualties had been reported so far. However, the extent of damage is believed to be significant.
Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot, though narrow access roads posed major challenges for firefighting operations. Police and local administration teams also reached the site and launched evacuation and relief efforts.
Residents were seen fleeing in panic, trying to salvage belongings and move to safer locations. Authorities are continuing efforts to bring the fire under control and assess the full impact of the incident.
