Haryana: Rao Inderjit Singh calls for unity among 36 communities

Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh on Wednesday called for unity among all sections of society, saying political battles could be fought successfully only when people remained united.

He was speaking at a programme organised in Hansi to mark the martyrdom day of freedom fighter Rao Tula Ram. It was the first such programme held outside south Haryana. Rao Inderjit unveiled a nearly 41-foot-high statue of Rao Tula Ram at the event.

“Unity is the source of strength. There are many who want to divide us, but we need to remain united,” he said, referring to the 36 communities and asserting that major battles could be won only when people stood together. He cited the formation of the BJP government in Haryana for a third consecutive term as an example of what could be achieved through unity.

Recalling Rao Tula Ram’s contribution to the freedom struggle, Rao Inderjit said the fight against the British was not confined to any particular community. People from all 36 communities had participated in the struggle, he said, adding that the same spirit of unity was needed to face the challenges before society today. He said the next such programme would be organised in Hisar.

Health Minister Arti Rao, daughter of Rao Inderjit Singh, who attended the event as the guest of honour, said the stories of freedom fighters such as Rao Tula Ram were a source of inspiration for the younger generation. The sacrifices of numerous freedom fighters had secured Independence and it was the responsibility of the present generation to preserve their history and pass it on, she said. Referring to the 1857 uprising, Arti Rao said around 5,000 patriots had laid down their lives in the struggle at Nasibpur and people of Hansi had also made a significant contribution.
