Four tourists were killed in a road accident on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road in Uttarakhand on Wednesday when their car reportedly lost control and plunged nearly 500 metres into a deep gorge near Kolhukhet.
According to the police, the victims were returning from Uttarkashi in a Maruti Celerio car. Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle’s brakes may have failed while negotiating a steep downhill stretch, causing the driver to lose control.
The car veered off the road and fell into the gorge. Police, along with rescue teams, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. However, all four occupants of the vehicle were found dead.
The deceased have been identified as Satyaprakash, a resident of Sonepat; 19-year-old Manit; Savita (48), a resident of Nehru Nagar in Ghaziabad; and Sangeeta (46), a resident of Karol Bagh in Delhi.
Police said a detailed investigation is under way to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. The mechanical condition of the vehicle will also be examined.
Expressing grief, Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami said the news of tourists losing their lives in the accident near Jharipani on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road is deeply saddening. He prayed for peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to bear the irreparable loss.
